The Role of Business in the 21st Century

What is the role of business in society in the 21st century?

In today's global environment where systems are so closely connected, the influence of companies on the social, economic, and environmental facets of the communities in which they operate are significant. Businesses serve their shareholders by aspiring to maximize shareholder return, however many communities and host governments expect companies to do more than provide jobs, pay taxes, and return profits to shareholders. They expect companies to contribute resources - money and expertise - to enhance the communities in which they operate.

There is concern about the sustainability of relying on companies to provide what has traditionally been provided by governments, including health care and education. What happens if the company exits the community, for whatever reason? How will those programs, services, and infrastructure be affected or managed afterwards?

So, what is the role of business in the 21st century in meeting the needs of communities where they operate? What is the role of government? What is the role of the social sector? What can individuals do to be part of the solution?
